This has been one of the great divides between IT and Facilities personnel and Reason #1 to consider a modular or containerized data center solution as some of these modular and containerized data center solutions can be deployed rapidly and in line with a typical IT planning schedule.

Facility Scalability

Reason #2 to consider modular and containerized data center solutions is these solutions offer scalability.  Careful with this one though, as the power and cooling support infrastructure, such as your utility feed and switchgear and your central cooling plant don’t offer this scalability, but there is still a tremendous benefit to being able to offer scalability for the whitespace in your data center strategy. Another thing to consider is that some of the containerized data center building blocks are quite large. For instance, for an enterprise a 40 foot 500kW container that houses 1,000 quad core processors might be an acceptable building block, but how can we offer scalability to a small business that would never even grow into a 500KW 1,000 quad core need? Reason #3 to consider modular and containerized data center solutions is these solutions offer higher efficiency. As most data centers struggle to keep in the optimal efficiency range of their designed loads, modular and scalable architecture allow us to manage the optimal efficiency and add efficient capacity as needed. Most modular solutions also offer highly efficient close coupled cooling solutions that eliminate air mixing. The newest modular solution PTS offers, the BladeRoom Modular Data Center, has been designed from the outset to maximize data center efficiency, using free cooling for over 99% of the year and delivering a proven PUE as low as 1.13 in temperate climates across a large load range from 40% to 100% capacity and 1kW to 24kW per rack.  The PUE of the BladeRoom System varies depending on the climate in which the data center is located, with PUEs as low as 1.19 for temperate climates like the New York and 1.31 for hot and humid climates like Dubai.

Many organizations have struggled having such a diverse portfolio of data center real estate that it has been hard to develop repeatable standards for power, cooling, cabling and physical security infrastructure. When we develop a repeatable building block with a modular or containerized data center solution, we can design and engineer repeatable standards providing the versatility to reuse these assets in any location. Yes, we may need to uniquely engineer the core power and cooling plant infrastructure in our real estate portfolio, but the scalable data center building blocks can be engineered once creating an incredible savings and economy of scale.

Reason #6 to consider modular and containerized data center solutions is these solutions can provide a higher level of structural security. Many data centers that are constructed conventionally may have a 1 or 2 hour fire wall that has been voided by a 20 minute rated door or by a penetration that hasn’t been properly fire stopped.  More importantly these conventionally constructed data centers have no Class 125 rating so even if the fire doesn’t penetrate the data center perimeter the electronic media may be corrupted. The reality is conventionally built data centers offer little protection from catastrophic events like fire, wind, earthquakes, flood, or protect from building threats such as water, dust, EMI, RFI, theft and vandalism. FireLock Server Vaults offer up to 4 hour Class 125 fire protection as well as protection from all of the above threats.

The PUE of the BladeRoom System varies depending on the climate in which the data center is located, with PUEs as low as 1.13 for temperate climates like the UK and 1.31 for hot and humid climates like Dubai.

PUE figures have been calculated with all electrical loss through an external N+1 UPS system, N+1 standby generators, 2N transformers, plant ventilation systems and lighting. Independently the BladeRoom PUE for a data center located in the UK is below 1.1.

A BladeRoom data center with 1MW of IT will only require 130kW of additional power for everything else. This PUE delivers the lowest operating costs and carbon emissions available.

With such a small amount of power required for support systems and with mechanical cooling so rarely used, BladeRoom energy efficient data centers can allow a far greater proportion of site power to be dedicated to servers by running back-up cooling on generator power – maximizing available power and increasing overall IT capacity on a power-constrained site.

Proven through extensive field-testing, the BladeRoom system offers the highest efficiency and has been proven to consistently deliver an extremely low data center PUE over a range of IT loads.

BladeRoom Group invested over $800k in designing and manufacturing a ‘climate emulator’ to test the BladeRoom system’s energy efficiency over an extensive range of loads and temperature bands.

Seven zones of the psychometric chart (seven sets of climatic conditions with a variety of temperature and humidity levels) were tracked through weeks of testing, where a live BladeRoom system, housing 250kW of evenly distributed heat emulators, was tested with live loads ranging from 15% to 100%.

BladeRoom PUE figures are not calculated figures based upon very high loads, but are achieved in operation both partially and fully loaded. Quoted PUE figures include allowances for site electrical infrastructure losses – the UK example achieved PUE 1.13 with electrical losses and the data center in isolation was PUE 1.03 – 1.08 during live testing.

A range of rack densities, from 1kW per rack to beyond 24kW per rack, can be delivered in a BladeRoom data center, enabling the provision of low, medium or high densities – or a combination of all three within the same facility. The patent pending BladeRoom cooling system allows any rack to be made low, medium or high density without additional cooling equipment or special provisions required.

A rack can start at a very low density and be filled over time to beyond 24kW per rack without any loss of efficiency, offering real future proofing and flexibility as technology moves towards higher density IT setups.

BladeRoom data centers can be scaled up or down in size to closely match business demand and offer the required number of racks and IT capacity, allowing any facility to change from a low to medium to high density throughout its operational life.

The BladeRoom system has been rigorously tested and proven to achieve densities over 24kW per rack using 100% free air cooling, something that has not previously been achieved. As there is enormous diversity in peak loads of the individual servers, the dynamic entrainment of ambient air is sufficient to cool the servers in all but the most extreme external conditions. In such conditions, the standby cooling system will be used when called for by the BMS, albeit rarely (less than 1% of the annual operating cycle in temperate climates).

Tier 3 or Tier 4 data centre specifications offer full concurrent maintenance with redundant components and dual distribution paths. Data Center Tier

The BladeRoom system has been approved by UK Uptime Institute Accredited Tier Designers as meeting full Tier 3 and Tier 4 levels of compliance when specified. This allows planned maintenance with no downtime through a fully concurrently maintainable design. Every critical system in the BladeRoom data centre is designed as N+1 or 2N.

BladeRoom facilities also deploy additional pipe work, cable and distribution paths with bypass switching to allow the ‘hot swap’ of all key system components. This means that the facility can function at 100% capacity whilst maintenance or repair of any critical component takes place.

Built to Tier 3 data centre standards, BladeRoom data centers can be upgraded to meet Tier 4 with little additional cost. A Tier 4 solution can be delivered with two fully independent plant and power management zones – each designed to provide the critical load. This configuration offers full fault tolerance against unplanned failures.

A BladeRoom data centre can be easily zoned to create areas of different resilience. Resilience levels of Tier 3 and Tier 4 can be designated in accordance with the needs of different functions within the business.
